Paradigm Foundation Grant funds FUN club for disabled young people

Posted on the 22nd March 2018

Last year the Paradigm Foundation awarded a £5,000 grant to the FUN Young Adult Club in Luton.

The Club provides a wide range of fun activities for 18 -25 year olds with learning and physical disabilities and a vital opportunity to make new friends and learn new skills.

The activities are designed to encourage communication and improve social and independent living skills. As well as indoor sport, arts and crafts and team games, regular sensory games and memory games provide a challenge whilst improving concentration skills. Young people attending the club are awarded with mini certificates for their achievements. This encourages participation and the young members love them! The young people are encouraged to voice their opinions and to shape the future of the club.

Cooking classes have also been a big hit. The young people come up with menus and learn how to budget for the meals as well as shopping for ingredients with a member of staff. Back in the kitchen they make tasty pizza, cookies, pasta, spaghetti bolognese and toasties and then sit down to socialise over their meal.

Sarah Robinson from FUN said: “We are extremely grateful to the Paradigm Foundation for their very generous support which funded FUN activities during 2017.

“Over the year disabled young people attending the club have developed new skills including preparing and cooking meals for the entire group. Their confidence has increased so much that they were able to perform their own pantomime to an audience of 90 people.

“Each young adult has improved their social interaction skills and have forged some strong friendships with other members of the group, opening up new social opportunities, and reducing isolation.

“Funding from the Paradigm Foundation has enabled us to purchase cooking ingredients and activity materials for 12 months as well as funding trained and qualified staff to support these vulnerable young people to take part in activities which would not otherwise be available to them.”

The Paradigm Foundation is proud to be associated with this fantastic project. If you know a resident or organisation in the area where we have homes that needs a bit of extra help, you can find out more about how to apply for funding here.
