Foundation grant supports local care farm

A £5,000 grant from Paradigm Foundation has enabled Road Farm Countryways in Great Missenden to improve their facilities and continue the vital work that they do helping young people with learning difficulties to thrive and learn.

Road Farm Countryways is a family-run working farm which also provides support and important life skills to children and young adults in a calm outdoor environment.

When service users arrive on the farm they are given a schedule of tasks for the day which can include feeding the animals, collecting eggs, transporting hay bales, cooking and cleaning the farm. Tasks teach service users a variety of skills from team work and listening to basic cooking and food preparation, respecting animals and the environment.

Service users get a sense of purpose and achievement from completing the different tasks and appreciate having a routine to their day. Being outdoors is also proven to improve the service users’ physical and mental health.

The Foundation grant went towards the farm’s ‘Growth project’ which involved renovating the old farrowing house into disabled toilet and changing facilities and also a wood-turning workshop. The new facilities mean that the care farm is more accessible and those with physical disabilities can benefit from the great work that Road Farm Countryways do. Meanwhile, the wood-turning workshop provides the young adults with a unique opportunity to learn a new skill.

Wendy Gray, co-leader of Road Farm Countryways, said “We are delighted to have completed our toilet and workshop transformations and are so grateful for support from the Paradigm Foundation. Our new facilities mean that we can support more young people and adults with learning difficulties and other disabilities, enabling them to get out into the countryside and learn vital life skills.”
