“ToolShed training changed my life” says Paradigm resident Ross

Posted on the 23rd June 2016

Ross, 24, has always wanted to work but mental health issues mean he has struggled to get on a career path.ToolShed helps young people build meaningful lives, offers training, personal development and business mentoring – and the training course completed by Ross is a stepping stone to further training or work.

It includes an intensive construction skills course, training to get a CSCS card, a health and safety certificate, a level 2 certificate in a specific trade and much more.

“This course has been brilliant, it has really built my confidence up which is great as confidence is a big issue for people who haven’t worked for a while” says Ross who lives in a Paradigm home in High Wycombe.

“It really helps you to find out about yourself and what your ambitions and capabilities are. It’s been so valuable to me and made me feel independent and ready to take the next step.”

Ross, who hopes to find work in the landscaping or gardening industry, encourages other residents to get involved with ToolShed.

“It’s different to college as there is a lot of interaction with your tutor on a one to one basis” adds Ross. “It’s really fun but professional at the same time, there are deadlines you have to meet but the tutors give you a lot of support.

“I would definitely say that other people should give it a go, it’s been such a positive influence on me and really has changed my life.”

Jessica Tyrrell, Centre Director at ToolShed says: “Ross is one of our real success stories, he has really thrived on the course and it’s been great to see him developing his skills and confidence.”

Alf Dench, Chair of the Paradigm Foundation, which is funded by Paradigm Housing Group, says: “We’re delighted that our funding is giving people like Ross the opportunity to improve their life chances. We look forward to following his progress.”
